Three tourists trapped in a river when the waterfall overflowed during heavy rain were rescued in India.

The group of friends went to the Tiktoli Dumdar Waterfall for a day trip swimming where they also had a picnic in Madhya Pradesh on July 18.

However, the trio were caught by surprise when a flash flood gushed down Tiktoli and they were left clinging on a large rock until rescuers arrived.

Footage shows the three men being retrieved by officers with a rope by guiding them across the river amid fast fast-flowing waterfall.

All of them were successfully saved without injuries.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the region has been battered by heavy downpours due to the monsoon season.
