Chinese villagers astonished by discovery of giant mushrooms weighing over 50kg
Villagers in southwestern China were astonished by the discovery of giant mushrooms weighing over 50kg.
The impressive video was filmed in Baoshan City in Yunnan Province on July 17.
These mushrooms, though similar in colour to common wild varieties, are remarkably large. Some of the open caps are one to two times larger than a human face. The largest specimen measured 90 centimetres in diameter, 80 centimetres in height, and weighed over 50 kilograms.
"We usually have a lot of local mushrooms, but this size is extremely rare. We've never seen such a big one," exclaimed Wu Shangde from the Pingchangzi village group.
The mushroom cluster, composed of numerous smaller mushrooms but with a single root, was identified by experts from the Changning County Forestry and Grassland Bureau as the Giant Agaricus.
This species is typically found in subtropical and tropical regions of China, including Yunnan Province, Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, and Fujian Province.
The young mushrooms resemble king oyster mushrooms, with smooth, semi-spherical caps that later flatten and become grey-brown with a darker centre and inward-rolled edges. The stalk is cylindrical, gradually tapering upwards, and emits a faint mushroom aroma when examined closely.
Changning County's excellent ecological environment is conducive to wild mushroom proliferation. Nearby, many smaller mushrooms are also growing. "Besides the largest one in the middle, many more small mushrooms are sprouting around. In a few days, this area will be covered with these giant mushrooms," Wu Shangde noted.
Giant Agaricus thrives in hot, humid conditions with decayed grass-like materials. From germination to decay, it takes about a month to grow. Currently, it is a relatively rare edible mushroom in Yunnan and not recommended for casual picking by the public.
