Demonstrations in Indonesia are chaotic, police and students clash and attack each other.

Demonstration Calling for Criticism of the 10 Year Government of Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue Ends in Chaos, Monday 22 July 2024 Evening.

Initially, mass demonstrations from the All-Indonesian Student Executive Board (Bem Si) in the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue Area, Central Jakarta, Indonesia, have continued to hold demonstrations since this afternoon, July 22 2024. However, the demonstrations have not stopped. The police made efforts to force it to disband because they had crossed the threshold for holding a demonstration.

The police continued to fire water cannons at the crowd and continued to advance to push the crowd out of the area where the action was taking place at the Arjuna Wijaya horse statue. The police formed barricades to block the crowd who were trying to get closer to the horse statue.

Conditions are increasingly unfavorable and the crowd continues to be pushed out towards the Monas roundabout. At around 18.56 WIT, the crowd was increasingly pushed out. Apart from the water cannon, the police also deployed a crowd dispersing vehicle.

When the police dispersed, the crowd still took the time to convey their demands, namely to meet President Joko Widodo. At around 19.05 WIT, the police dispersed the crowd using water canons and chased the demonstrators. The crowd fought back by clashing with the police and attacking each other.

It is known that the masses brought 12 demands during a demonstration criticizing the 10 years of Jokowi's government. Bem Si Center Coordinator, Herianto, said that students took to the streets to prosecute Jokowi for a number of his policies and actions which were deemed not in favor of the people. "We demand that Jokowi not be girls in the 2024 Indonesian regional elections," said Herianto when met in the middle of the action next to the statue of Arjuna Wijaya.

The second demand is that students reject the return of the dual function of the TNI and Polri. Then, the masses also urged the government to immediately pass the Asset Confiscation Bill and the Indigenous Peoples Bill.

"Resolve cases of serious human rights violations and take firm action against perpetrators of police repression. Then, resolve the agrarian conflict and realize true agrarian reform," continued this Mataram University student.

The masses also urge the government to revoke PP number 25 of 2024 and urge the government to review the nickel downstream policy. The government is also required to deal with industrial waste and pay attention to environmental impact analysis in project development.

"Demanding the Government to Improve Facilities, Services and Health Systems," added Heri. The masses urge the government to immediately revoke the Tapera Law and revise a number of problematic articles.

Then, the masses also demanded that the government be able to achieve justice and equal distribution of education in Indonesia.

“Creating the Discourse of Free Education in Indonesia. "Finally, revoke and revise Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 2 of 2024 to give back the material substance," concluded Heri.

The crowd demanded that they meet President Jokowi or anyone from the Palace. They are pressing for direct acceptance by the government.
