Militant groups marched through the streets to Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City as Philippine President Marcos Jr was set to deliver his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 22.

Protesters were seen rejecting the administration's slogan, 'Bagong Pilipinas', or New Philippines.

Effigies of President Marcos, known by his nickname Bongbong, and Vice President Sara Duterte were also visible, highlighting the significant rift between the two, who were previously allies.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said: 'The effigy features Marcos Jr and Sara Duterte engaged in a slapping brawl while being smug and indifferent to the plight of ordinary people who are barely surviving because of rising prices, insecure jobs, and cheap wages.'

'The effigy intends to demonstrate that the nonstop bickering and manoeuvre for power and influence of the Marcos and Duterte dynasties is a public nuisance. It reflects the greed of politicians who seek to gain more power instead of addressing the concerns of ordinary citizens.'

Rallies on the day of the President's State of the Nation Address were expected, with participants using various creative props to demonstrate their opposition to the administration.

Some 22,000 police officers have been deployed to prevent protesters from approaching the parliament.

Meanwhile, the Quezon City local government had already imposed a liquor ban from Monday, 12:01 AM to 6 PM. This measure was intended to maintain order and prevent alcohol-related incidents during the SONA.

Former President Ferdinand Marcos is best known for epic levels of corruption - with an estimated 10 billion dollars plundered from the country. His wife, Imelda, became infamous for her overseas shopping trips and a vast collection of designer shoes.
