Barbados - July 22, 2024

In a bid to unravel the mystery behind the absence of tropical cyclones amidst Saharan Dust, Hurricane Hunters embarked on a daring mission on Monday. Their objective: to probe why these dust-laden skies seem devoid of cyclonic activity.

Observers have noted a stark decline in tropical cyclone activity lately, attributing it to the Saharan Air Layer, a phenomenon that blankets the region. From their base in Barbados, crews aboard NOAA WP-3D Orion #NOAA43, affectionately dubbed "Miss Piggy," spearheaded the MAGPIE project. This initiative, officially known as Moisture and Aerosol Gradients/Physics of Inversion Evolution, aims to explore how Saharan dust interacts with tropical waves, ultimately thwarting cyclone formation.
