STORYLINE:
More than 4.7 million vehicles have crossed the Chinese-built Peljesac Bridge since it was inaugurated in 2022, said a project manager from Croatian Roads in an interview with Xinhua on Monday.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): DAVOR PERIC, Project manager from Croatian Roads
"Since the grand opening of the Peljesac Bridge, which happened in July 2022, up until this current date, we have more than 4,700,000 vehicles using the bridge. Also, what really makes us happy is that (until) today we did not have any real accidents concerning passengers' lives, which proves that the design of the project itself was very good and well accepted by drivers."
The 2.4-km-long Peljesac Bridge was constructed by a Chinese consortium led by the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
Peric welcomed the fact that the bridge has connected Croatia's mainland with the Peljesac Peninsula on the country's southern Adriatic coast for the first time.
Tourists and logistics drivers no longer have to make detours to go to cities in southern Croatia.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DAVOR PERIC, Project manager from Croatian Roads
"All this is really, really important for us as this project obviously gave new traffic ways to the Croatian south. And we believe that it has significantly improved the lives (of residents) in the Croatian south. And it means a lot to everyone in Croatia, not just the locals living in the south."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Zagreb.
