STORYLINE:
An annual international training course on ocean science for sustainable development was recently held in Qingdao, a coastal city in China's Shandong Province.
The two-week course brought together 20 experts from China, the U.S., Australia and other countries to teach 44 trainees from 23 countries, including China, Australia, Germany, Japan, and Indonesia.
This year's training course aims to equip young trainees with the knowledge and skills to better understand ocean model and ecosystem model.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): EDELGARD BAUMANN, Trainee from Germany
"I think for me, the most interesting thing was that we don't necessarily need to use models with high complexity. I also really like that we were going in depth in different models. We had a look about uncertainties that existed there, different opinions and what are like the most recent developments in the modeling science."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DHARMA, Trainee from Indonesia
"For this course, many young researchers, maybe in the future, we can make collaboration, because we (are) also with different backgrounds, not only (from) ocean, but also from the physical oceanography. This course can make (us) better in the future."
In 2011, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) established a training and research center on Ocean Dynamics and Climate (ODC) in Qingdao.
Under this framework, 750 trainees from 55 countries have benefitted from the training courses.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): AGUS SANTOSO, Expert from Indonesia
"I think China has been and is playing an important role in global climate science internationally, and China has been putting a lot of effort in ocean observations as well as developing inter-country connection. This kind of effort is really important if we want to progress, to improve science and education for the younger generation for our future."
