Fire breaks out at petrol pump in southern India, halting traffic

A fire erupted at a petrol pump in southern India’s Kerala, causing significant disruptions and a complete halt of traffic on the State highway as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

The incident took place at Vazhakode HP petrol pump in Wadakkanchery, Thrissur district on July 23.

Visuals showed a massive fire was raging at the petrol pump, with fierce flames reaching high into the sky. Thick, black smoke was billowing upwards, spreading everywhere. All the workers and people present at the petrol pump were standing at a safe distance, watching the intense scene unfold.

Speaking to Newslions, Wadakkanchery Fire Station Officer, Nidheesh TK stated that after getting information of the incident, three units of firefighters were dispatched to the scene to control and extinguish the flames. The incident has caused a complete halt of traffic on the State highway, leading to major disruptions in the area.

According to the reports, drainage water mixed with fuel that had overflowed from the pump triggered the blaze. The fire erupted when the water with fuel content flowed to waste burning near a shop close to the pump.
