Videos filmed in Kaifeng City in Henan Province and Suizhou City in Hubei Province show pensioners sitting on the floor or on stools they have brought with them, congregating in supermarket aisles to cool off.

Reports suggest that these seniors are trying to save on home electricity costs while also enjoying the social atmosphere of being together.

Supermarket management has stated that, as long as the gatherings do not disrupt normal operations, they are open and welcoming to this behaviour.
