Kathmandu, Nepal - July 24, 2024

Eighteen bodies are confirmed to have been recovered after a plane crashed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal's capital Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN)'s search and rescue coordination center issued a statement saying 18 were killed and one injured in the incident.

Hansa Raj Pandey, a CAAN spokesman, said the airport has remained closed following the incident, while an injured person has been hospitalized.

The spokesman initially put the death toll at 22, but this was later corrected after the rescue team was said to have "double-counted" three victims.

The Saurya Airlines flight bound for the city of Pokhara was carrying 19 people, all of whom were employees of the airline, said Pandey.

Witnesses told a China Central Television (CCTV) reporter that the plane nosedived into the ground and that an explosion could be heard inside the airport.
