Hundreds relocated in Gujarat as heavy rains flood districts, disrupt daily life , Diamond City Surat worst affected
Hundreds of people were evacuated after swollen rivers and overflowing dams cut off several villages and inundated low-lying areas in many parts of Gujarat amid torrential downpours on July 24, officials said
Normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy rains pounded the south and central Gujarat districts like Surat, Bharuch and Anand since morning, prompting the authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in some places, they said.
The administration in the rain-battered districts deployed personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local fire teams to rescue people from flooded areas and relocate them to safe places.
Surat is one of the most affected city due to heavy rains .
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) shifted 955 people in last 2 days to safer places in Surat city due to creeks flooding following heavy rainfall.
Between 6 am to 6 pm on Wednesday, Surat received 314 mm of rainfall, resulting in waterlogging in different parts of the city.
According to the SMC flood control room, while the water level at Kakra creek has reached 6.6 m, Bhedwad creek is at 6.8 m, Mithi Creek at 9 m, Bhatena Creek at 6.6 m and Simada creek at 4.5 m. The water level at these creeks are close to their danger marks, said civic officials.
