Beijing, China - July 23, 2024

The Arab League and Fatah's office in Egypt welcomed the China-brokered reconciliation agreement reached among the 14 Palestinian factions in Beijing, expressing their appreciation to China for its relentless efforts to achieve this feat.

The Palestinian factions signed the Beijing Declaration on ending schism and strengthening Palestinian solidarity after holding reconciliation talks in the Chinese capital city from July 21 to 23.

The Palestinian faction Fatah's office in Egypt says the landmark step is crucial for a two-state solution and hopes its implementation would ease the hardship of the Palestinian people.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has said multiple times that China always firmly supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights, supports Palestinian factions in realizing reconciliation through dialogue and consultation, and supports the achievement of Palestinian solidarity and unity as well as the establishment of an independent state of Palestine at an early date. The ministry said China will continue to make unremitting efforts to this end.

The Arab League says they're thankful for the Chinese efforts to bring to light this Palestinian road map for reconciliation.

"We are thankful to the People's Republic of China for arranging this important meeting, which is made of a series of dialogues among the Palestinian factions. This aims for reconciliation, ending division and uniting all Palestinian power to end the suffering of our people and achieve their dream of independence and freedom. An important outcome which Wang Yi announced, which is a necessity to discuss in the near future, is Palestine's full membership in the United Nations. This membership is crucial to begin the two-state solution. This would be an application of international law and agreement made by all countries of the world.";

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Gamal Roshdy, spokesman, Secretary General of Arab League:
"We followed the meetings closely in Beijing and we think it's a very important and significant step towards achieving Palestinian reconciliation and also to implement the two-state solution, two-state vision. We are thankful and appreciate the Chinese initiative to bring together all the Palestinian factions and come up with this landmark agreement. As we all know, there have been, throughout the years, since the Palestinian division in 2007, there have been many attempts for achieving and bringing about reconciliation. Unfortunately, they were not successful. The parties and the sides, maybe they were not interested in honoring their commitments. We hope this agreement would be different.";

"I think all parties look to China as a neutral party, a country that has always been on the right side of history. Its positions on the Palestinian question have been steady and consistent with international law, supporting the cause of an independent Palestinian State. So, the Chinese role is, of course, welcomed by the Arab League, by the Arab countries and obviously by all the Palestinian factions. It's important to build on and follow through on the agreement.";
