As General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping's Special Representative, China's top political advisor Wang Huning mourned the passing away of Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), in Hanoi, Vietnam on Thursday.

Wang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, laid wreaths, paused to observe a moment of silence, and bowed three times in front of the casket of Trong.

Wang conveyed Xi's and his wife Peng Liyuan's sincere condolences to Ngo Thi Man, the widow of Trong, and left a message in the condolence book.

On the same day, Wang also met with Vietnamese President To Lam.

Wang said that on the special occasion, the CPC and the Chinese people stand firmly together with the CPV and the Vietnamese people.

The CPC and the Chinese government firmly support the CPV in leading the Vietnamese people to take a path of development that suits Vietnam's national conditions, and back Vietnam in the cause of reform, opening up and socialist construction, Wang said.

Wang noted that China is willing to work with Vietnam to implement the important consensuses reached by the two sides during Xi's visit to Vietnam last year, so as to achieve solid progress and sustained growth in promoting the building of China-Vietnam community with a shared future.

For his part, To Lam said Vietnam will always bear in mind Trong's instructions on the friendship between the two countries, and give top priority to developing relations with China in its foreign policy.

In accordance with the important consensus reached between Trong and Xi, Vietnam will resolutely promote the building of the China-Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance.

Later on Thursday, Wang also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Do Van Chien.
