Their urgent efforts and brave actions against the relentless flow ensured the safety of the individuals caught in the river.
In a series of daring rescues, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) of Uttarakhand saved three Kanwariyas from the treacherous currents of the Ganges River at Kangra Ghat in Haridwar. The incidents took place on July 26, 2024, during the annual Kanwar Mela.
The first rescue involved Rohit Kumar, a 20-year-old from Dayanand Nagar, Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. While bathing, Rohit was caught in the river’s strong current and began to drown. SDRF personnel, including Chief Constable Jitendra Rawat, Constables Rajat Tomar, Anil Singh, and Firemen Sandeep Singh and Laxman Singh, managed to save him after a strenuous effort.
In a similar incident, 24-year-old Karan Kashyap from Kota Makkhan, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, also got swept away by the river’s force while bathing. The SDRF team, comprising Chief Constable Ashiq Ali, Constables Rajat Tomar, Shivam, and Firemen Sandeep Singh and Laxman Singh, executed a challenging rescue to bring him to safety.
The third rescue featured Phool Kumar, a 21-year-old from Nagal, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Like the others, he was overpowered by the river’s swift flow. The same dedicated team of SDRF members, including Chief Constable Ashiq Ali and Firemen Sandeep Singh, Laxman Singh, and Constables Shivam and Rajat Tomar, ensured his safe return to the shore after considerable exertion.
These rescues highlight the unwavering dedication and courage of the SDRF personnel, who continue to safeguard lives during the Kanwar Mela.
