STORYLINE:

From July 20 to 26, nearly 100 descendants of Dr. Sun Yat-sen were gathering in Zhongshan, south China's Guangdong Province for the 2024 Sun Yat-sen family descendants' ancestral roots-seeking and cultural exchange event. Activities include ancestral worship, social gatherings, and cultural heritage exploration.

Born in 1866, Sun was the founder of the Kuomintang Party, and is a revered revolutionary leader who played a pivotal role in overthrowing imperial rule in China.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): THEODORE TCHANG, Great-grandson of Sun Yat-sen
"It's always good to come back here, and it's good for my children too, because, I mean, they have more of an appreciation of the family history now than they did 10 years ago."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): REGINA LIN, Great-granddaughter of Sun Yat-sen
"It is important to pay respect to our ancestors and the way we can do that from abroad is to bring home the items that came from here.
My mother wishes that she could have come on this trip. She is 102. She sends her love and best wishes to China.
This trip is a great opportunity to see where they came from and to appreciate the progress that China has made.
Hopefully, they will come back again many times, and some may even decide to come back and stay."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): VICTOR SUN, Great-grandson of Sun Mei
"I've never gotten tired of living in Zhongshan because it keeps progressing every day. Sun Yat-sen once said, 'to revitalize the Chinese nation.' In my opinion, this is becoming a reality. Chinese culture is influential both in China and globally. To tell China's stories effectively and share its voice, it's important to promote exchanges among young people."
