SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LUDGER OELCK (Chinese name: Ou Ludi), German tourist
"Hello, everyone. My name is Ou Ludi. I am from Germany. I am traveling in China with my best friend. Today, we arrived in Longji, to see the Longji terraced fields. We are very happy to be here because the scenery is so beautiful, and the air here is also very refreshing. We are very happy."
For centuries, local inhabitants have painstakingly carved and cultivated layers of terraces that are crucial to their livelihoods.
In April 2018, four traditional agricultural projects in China were added to the list of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), with the Longji terraced fields being a part of one of these projects.
The landscape, resembling scales on ridges, fascinates visitors worldwide who come to marvel at this enduring symbol of southern China's farming culture.
