After a century-long wait, Paris welcomes back the Olympic Games with a splashy and "Seine-sational" opening ceremony, making itself a truly moveable feast.
The iconic River Seine glistened with cheers and shouts around 7:30 pm Friday when the audacious Paris Olympics opening ceremony, featuring global sports stars parading on a flotilla, was finally brought on stream.
In Saint-Etienne and many other cities across the country, residents gathered in fan zones to watch the celebrations on big screens.
SOUNDBITE (French): CHRISTOPHE, Local resident
"It's unprecedented. It's extraordinary to see that on the River Seine. We're used to seeing that in a stadium. It's historic to see that on the Seine with boats. It will be remembered in the history of Olympic Games."
The 2024 Olympics marks the third time that Paris has hosted the Summer Games. The first was in 1900, and the last was a century ago in 1924.
