Day old baby elephant learns to walk on its new wobbly legs
During a morning safari in the Kruger National Park, we received word of a female elephant that was just seen giving birth to a calf in a remote area of the park. We decided to go and follow up and see if we can find this elephant cow and her newborn calf. Seeing such a wonder in the African wild is a rare opportunity. We kept driving around, searching for the greater part of the morning but with no luck. Twenty-four hours later the next morning, we headed out on our safari again, giving it one more attempt to find this mother elephant with her baby. I couldn’t believe our luck and it felt like all the stars aligned in our favor when we finally found the incredible sight of the mother elephant and her day-old baby. The female elephant was continuously feeding in order to produce milk for her newly born. The day-old baby elephant looked very weak overall, and it was lying down more than standing up. The baby elephant would lie down and rest close to its mother and every now and then it would slowly get back up onto its wobbly legs. The heat was already setting in and I could see the baby elephant was leaning against its mother for some support and shade. Every once in a while, the baby elephant would venture a few meters away from its mother, still looking very shaky, stumbling and swinging from side to side while learning how to walk properly. It was incredibly heartwarming to view such a wonder in the African wild and we left hoping that the day-old baby elephant will quickly grow stronger and one day become a formidable adult elephant in the African bush.
