STORYLINE:
On Friday, five migratory bird sanctuaries along the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf coast in China were successfully added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Among these was the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve in Dongying, the first natural world heritage site in east China's Shandong Province.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): WANG ANDONG, Deputy Director, Research Center at Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve
"We have the most well-preserved wetland ecosystem in China's warm temperate zone. Our site is a crucial stopover, wintering habitat, and breeding ground on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, earning the nickname 'International Airport for Birds.' Besides birds, this reserve is also home to 193 species of fish and 512 species of insects."
According to official data, the number of bird species observed here has risen from 187 to 373 in around 20 years. Plant species have increased from 393 in 1995 to 685 today.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): WANG ANDONG, Deputy Director, Research Center at Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve
"Over the past five years, our reserve has undertaken extensive efforts, investing 1.36 billion yuan (about 187 million USD) in protection and restoration. We have restored over 20,000 hectares of wetlands, guided by high-level planning for high-quality conservation."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Dongying, China.
