STORYLINE:
An exhibition showcasing the preservation and restoration achievements of newly excavated cultural relics from the Sanxingdui Ruins site opened recently at the Sanxingdui Museum in Guanghan City, southwest China's Sichuan Province.
More than 50 pieces of newly restored bronze ware, golden ware, jadeware, ivory and other artifacts are displayed at the exhibition, which will last until the end of 2024.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): YU JIAN, Deputy director of Sanxingdui Museum
"This display cabinet exhibits the 3D printing mold we used for artifact extraction during the latest excavations at Sanxingdui.
As you can see, this artifact was quite large when found in the pit and falls into the category of large bronzes.
Why did we create a 3D data model for it during the extraction process? First, we needed to collect three-dimensional data from its surface and then create a mold using 3D printing. Given the large size and weight of these artifacts, there is a potential risk of damaging the artifact itself during extraction. Therefore, by using 3D printing, we create a silicone rubber mold for it. The silicone rubber can provide a cushioning effect, offering excellent protection for the artifact."
