This is the terrifying moment Mount Stromboli erupted off the north coast of Sicily in Italy.

Dramatic footage shows a jet of molten material spewing from the volcano at around 9:15 pm local time on July 26.

The eruption, which sent plumes of ash and volcanic gases into the sky, was closely monitored by scientists and researchers from the University of Florence.

Stromboli is an active volcano on a small island off the north coast of Sicily, Italy, known for its near-continuous eruptions over the past 2,000 years.
