STORYLINE:
An event to promote tourism and tea culture of China's western city Xi'an was held at the Sydney China Cultural Center on Saturday, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty of Xi'an to the Australian audience.
The opening ceremony featured the guzheng solo "Lanting Preface", a solo dance, and a reenactment of a court tea banquet scene to showcase the magnificence of the Tang Dynasty(618-907AD), when Chang'an (today's Xi'an) was the capital.
Xiao Xiayong, Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Australia, said that the event was another wonderful display of Xi'an culture and art in Australia, and also injected new vitality to promote cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia.
Ian Howard, a professor of Art & Design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), recalled his good impression of Xi'an and suggested that everyone should travel like an artist or thinker, hoping that Australian people can make full use of Shaanxi, a treasure house of world culture, to feel the art and culture of Shaanxi.
SOUNDBITE (English): IAN HOWARD, Professor of Art & Design UNSW
"I think China is the most important country in the world. It's vitally important that we understand each other. It's all pleasures of person-to-person relation, learning about other people's cultures, looking at their arts, experimenting with them, their ideas, their food, their geography, their wonderful location, Australian and Chinese. So it's all a great experience, we should embrace it positively."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Sydney, Australia.
