Pakistan tribal war erupts leaving hundreds dead and injured
A land dispute between the Sunni Muslim Madagi and Shiite Mali Khel tribes in northwestern Pakistan has resulted in 35 deaths and 121 injuries, local reports revealed.
The violence erupted on Wednesday, July 24, when a gunman targeted a council meeting that was attempting to mediate the long-standing conflict over farmland.
Footage shows the continued fighting on July 28.
Although no one was injured during the meeting, it renewed long-standing tensions between the clans, who have been living side-by-side in the Kurram district near the border of Afghanistan.
Efforts by the government and local leaders to broker a truce have so far been unsuccessful.
In Sunni-majority Pakistan, Shiite communities frequently face discrimination and violence. A government official has reported that 30 of the deceased in the conflict are from this minority sect.
