STORYLINE:
A Chinese tiger breeder has been dedicated to Siberian tiger protection for 37 years in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.
Liu Dan, the chief engineer of the Siberian Tiger Park in the province's capital Harbin, started his career in tiger protection in 1987.
Liu has been committed to returning the tigers to the forest. In recent years, he has designed rewilding programs for the Siberian tigers in the park. By taking measures such as dropping live animals from drones into the park, his team tries to create a close-to-nature environment to help these big cats prepare for their return to the wild.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LIU DAN, Chief engineer of the Siberian Tiger Park
"The wild population of Siberian tigers in China is scattered in nature. Such small, isolated populations face a severe issue of inbreeding, which significantly threatens their survival. To address this, we breed tigers in captivity and select the best individuals for rewilding. Through rewilding training, we identify tigers with strong adaptive abilities and prepare them for release into the wild. This program aims to improve and enhance the genetic quality of wild populations in China.
Our initial training phases for these tigers are followed by plans to establish more advanced rewilding training sites designed to enhance their survivability further. Currently, there are around 70 wild Siberian tigers in China. Thanks to decades of ecological protection, the population is seeing a gradual and steady increase with an improvement in their natural habitat."
Over the years, Liu has witnessed the recovery of the Siberian tiger population from the verge of extinction.
Now, the park is the world's largest breeding base for Siberian tigers, with more than 300 of them living in the area.
