SDRF rescues 28 pilgrims from drowning in river in northern India

The swift response of the SDRF Police of northern India’s Uttarakhand saved the lives of 28 Kanwariyas from drowning at Kangra Ghat during the ongoing Kanwar Mela.


The incident took place at Kangra Ghat in Haridwar district on July 29.


Visuals showed the rescue team bravely plunged into the river's strong currents, one by one, pulling each pilgrim to safety. Their swift and courageous actions, amidst the roaring water, ensured that every pilgrim was brought out safely, demonstrating remarkable heroism and teamwork.


In a remarkable display of bravery and quick action, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Uttarakhand successfully rescued 28 pilgrims from the treacherous currents of the Ganga River at Kangra Ghat, Haridwar. The series of rescues took place on July 29, 2024, during the Kanwar Mela, highlighting the unwavering dedication and efficiency of the SDRF team.


- Sahil, 19 years old, son of Mr. Ashok from Adamtadi, Dadri, Rohtak, Haryana, was swept away by the strong river currents while bathing. The SDRF personnel stationed at Kangra Ghat swiftly rescued him.


- Four youths from Hapur Road, Rusipur, Meerut, Rajkumar (16), Karan Kumar (16), Sachin Kumar (18), and Rupesh Kumar (23), were also caught in the strong currents. The SDRF team quickly responded, swimming and using a raft to pursue and rescue all four youths safely.


- Two more youths, Sagar (18), son of Ram Bhol, and Vikas (age not provided), son of Vikram, were rescued by the SDRF team after they were caught in the rapid flow of the river.


- Three youths from Jind, Haryana, Vijay (23), son of Kitab Singh, Sahil (23), son of Dayanand, and Ajay (22), son of Karanveer, were saved by the SDRF team.


- Finally, Yashpal (22), son of Arjun Pal from Tikamgarh, was rescued from drowning by the vigilant SDRF team.


The SDRF has so far saved 68 pilgrims during the Kanwar Mela through their prompt rescue operations. The dedication and duty-bound actions of the SDRF personnel have been highly praised by the pilgrims, local residents, and the families of those rescued.
