Around 6:35 PM on July 28, a three-year-old girl got her left hand stuck in an elevator door while returning home with her grandmother in a residential complex in Zigong, southern China. Quick thinking and rapid response from her parents, who used cooking oil to lubricate and free her hand, averted a more serious outcome.

Surveillance footage showed the girl standing close to the elevator door. As the elevator reached their floor and the door opened, her left hand was trapped in the door gap. She cried out in pain, prompting her grandmother to try and free her, but to no avail. Hearing the commotion, the girl's mother rushed over and, after assessing the situation, went to fetch cooking oil from home. The father joined the effort, and together they applied the oil along the door gap, successfully freeing the girl's hand within minutes.

The girl was immediately taken to a local hospital, where doctors confirmed that despite some swelling, there were no cuts, bleeding, or fractures, making the incident a close call.

Xu Yi, a senior researcher at the Hubei Special Equipment Inspection and Testing Institute, praised the parents for their calm response but advised against using cooking oil as it could damage elevator components and cause malfunctions. He recommended calling the emergency number inside the elevator and waiting for professional help. Xu also emphasized the importance of educating children about elevator safety.

The video was provided with permission from local media.
