UK: Climate Activists Paralyze Gatwick Demanding Fossil Fuel Treaty Amid Global Crisis
London, United Kingdom - July 29, 2024
Supporters of the "Just Stop Oil" movement have disrupted operations at Gatwick Airport on July 29 in a bold call for urgent climate action. Just Stop Oil, collaborating internationally, is demanding governments worldwide establish a fossil fuel treaty to phase out oil, gas, and coal by 2030, citing the escalating climate crisis.
At approximately 8 am, seven activists entered Gatwick's Southern terminal, deploying lock-on devices in suitcases to block departure gates. The situation is evolving, with authorities responding to the disruption caused by the activists.
Among those participating is Mel Carrington, 63, a former environmental consultant from Dorset and mother, who expressed profound concern over the impacts of unchecked global heating. Carrington emphasized the urgency of governmental action to prevent societal collapse amidst extreme weather and potential food shortages.
Greg Sculthorpe, a mathematician from Doncaster, echoed Carrington's sentiments, condemning inaction by the wealthy and powerful while advocating for immediate fossil fuel reduction measures to avoid catastrophic consequences.
The "Oil Kills" international movement has mobilized protests at airports globally, involving 21 groups across 12 countries. These actions come amid record-breaking global temperatures, highlighting the urgency of climate action and the growing international demand for systemic change.
