Typhoon delivers seafood buffet to Chinese beach but experts warn of safety risks
Recently, the aftermath of typhoon Gaemi brought a surprising sight to the beach near Houmen Middle School in the Shenzhen Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone, southern China—an abundance of oysters.
On July 27, following the typhoon, the shoreline was suddenly covered with countless oysters, along with other seafood like mussels, crabs, and clams, creating a spectacular scene. Thrilled residents flocked to the beach with buckets and tools, eagerly collecting the unexpected bounty. The sheer number of oysters led some to exclaim, "There's no way to pick them all up!"
Industry experts suggest these oysters likely came from nearby aquaculture farms. The powerful winds and waves of the typhoon might have washed them out of their cultivation areas, depositing them on the beach. While these oysters might appear tempting, experts and authorities caution against consuming them due to potential risks related to freshness, pollution, parasites, and bacteria.
Authorities also warned that heading to the beach immediately after a typhoon can be hazardous. The lingering effects of the storm, such as strong winds and large waves, pose a risk of being swept away. Additionally, debris like broken glass and nails may be present on the beach, posing a danger to bare feet and hands. More concerningly, potentially dangerous marine life, such as jellyfish, sea urchins, and sea snakes, may also appear in coastal waters after a typhoon.
