Massive floods as high as an adult's chest hit hundreds of houses in Indonesia, hundreds of families and children trapped in the flood were evacuated.

Heavy rain that poured for hours caused a number of rivers to overflow and caused major flooding in Andowia District, North Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, on Tuesday 30 July 2024.

Hundreds of houses in five villages, in the Andowia sub-district, were hit by floodwater as high as an adult's chest, resulting in many residents, including children and the elderly, being trapped in their homes.

"Big floods hit five villages in Andowia sub-district, namely Laronangga, Labungga, Puwonua, Puususi and Waworete villages. We are continuing to evacuate hundreds of residents who are trapped in the big floods at this time," said Dedi Irawan, Commander of the Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas) SAR Post. A joint team from Basarnas, TNI and Polri was immediately deployed to carry out the evacuation. Using rubber boats, they struggled to evacuate residents to safer places, anticipating the possibility of casualties.

Although the flood this time did not cause any casualties, material losses are estimated at billions of rupiah.

Flooding continues to occur until now, July 30 2024, due to rainfall which is still quite high.
