Deteriorating Thames shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery at low tide off Kent, UK

Buy video

The River Thames' most famous shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery sank back in 1944 just over a mile offshore of Kent.

SS Richard Montgomery lies 1.5 miles north of Sheerness beach and went down with 1400 tonnes of explosives onboard.

Close-up footage filmed from a sailing boat at low-tide on Sunday (July 30) shows wreck's three masts which stick up above the waterline.

Experts believe deterioration of the ship has sped-up based the latest published survey by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

All craft are prohibited from entering a 250-metre exclusion zone around the wreck, which is monitored 27/7 by Port of Sheerness.
