Resident stuck in mud from India landslides survives by clinging to rocks for five hours
This is the incredible moment a resident who was stranded in thick mud during landslides in India was found alive.
The man was unable to free himself from the quagmire when rescuers noticed him in the Wayanad district of Kerala some five hours after landslides devastated the region, killing at least 93 and leaving hundreds more trapped.
Following the rescue operation, the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officials said that despite being partially covered in mud and rocks, the man showed incredible resilience to free himself from the treacherous conditions. His perseverance ultimately led to his rescue by the dedicated team of rescuers.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office said that two helicopters of the Indian Air Force have also been mobilised to join the effort.
However, the weather conditions have made rescue work more difficult and communications in the area have also been cut.
Officials said that around 400 families have been isolated following the collapse of a bridge in the Chooral Mala area, where three significant landslides have plunged the entire region into a state of panic.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the natural disaster.
He said: 'Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured.
'Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there.'
Officials at the Kerala government announced that two days, July 30 and 31, will be observed as state mourning. All state activities have been deferred.
Kerala's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, said that all government agencies are fully engaged in the rescue operations.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has confirmed that both the Fireforce and National Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed, with additional teams en route to assist in the efforts.
Two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been directed to Wayanad to provide support, the KSDMA said.
