Lowland Streaked Tenrec Makes Rare Stridulation Sounds
Occurred on September 1, 2022 / Madagascar
Info from Licensor: "A baby lowland streak tenrec (Madagascar hedgehog shrew or Hemicentetes semispinosus) makes a wild sound. Stridulation is the act of producing sound, usually by rubbing two body parts together. Some of the most well-known insects that stridulate are the grasshoppers and crickets. It is believed that the lowland-streaked tenrec is the only mammal capable of stridulation, producing a high-pitched noise by rubbing together specialized quills on its back. This was a brave baby being filmed, followed closely by its mother. You can clearly hear the stridulation sounds, a very rare thing on film. This tenrec is endemic to Madagascar and found nowhere else on the planet. This wild animal fact was recorded in Masoala National Park in Madagascar in September 2022."
