Citizens shocked as driverless McLaren repeatedly collides with Maybach in China
In the early hours of July 28, a bizarre incident occurred in Yangdong District, Yangjiang City, southern China. A high-performance McLaren 600LT sports car, in an apparent driverless state, collided three times with a Maybach GLS SUV parked ahead of it.
According to video footage from the scene, the incident began when the McLaren rear-ended the Maybach, embedding its front end partially into the Maybach's rear. As the driver of the Maybach attempted to move forward to assess the situation, the McLaren, still moving driverless, continued to roll forward, colliding a second time. In a surprising twist, a third collision occurred when the Maybach tried to move again, with the McLaren following closely behind and hitting it once more. Throughout the episode, onlookers expressed their disbelief, while a man—presumably the McLaren owner—tried unsuccessfully to stop the car.
It is speculated that the McLaren's owner may have failed to engage the handbrake or leave the car in neutral after exiting the vehicle, which led to the car rolling forward in a driverless state, with the doors locked.
The accidents resulted in significant damage to the McLaren, particularly to the front bonnet, bumper, and headlights. The Maybach's rear bumper and other parts also sustained damage. The total cost of the damages has yet to be determined.
Local traffic police have intervened and are investigating the incident. The exact cause of the accident and the assignment of responsibility are still under investigation.
The video was provided with permission from local media.
