France: Paris Olympics spark surge in tourism, consumption
Paris, France - July 27, 2024
Storyline:
The ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics have transformed the city into a bustling hub of activity, igniting a substantial surge in consumer spending and laying a firm foundation for future tourism.
The Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that during the ongoing Paris Olympics and upcoming Paralympic Games, the city will host around 15.3 million tourists. Of these, 11.3 million are visiting specifically for the Olympic Games, and 86.7 percent are local tourists.
Families from around France have put off their typical seasonal travel plans to visit the capital city in a show of national pride.
According to the Chinese tour-planning app Feizhu, the booking volume of air tickets from China to France increased by approximately double in the week before and after the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games compared to last year. Another Chinese tour planning app, Tongcheng, reported that hotel bookings in downtown Paris have increased more than fourfold year on year.
During the years leading up to the Olympic Games, Paris has implemented numerous measures to enhance the travel experience. Upgrades in both infrastructure and services related to cultural tourism consumption are expected to pave the way for future growth.

"The main difference is probably in terms of consumption. People who are more going to competitions and stadiums, probably less in museums or cultural activities, and probably more people in small restaurants or food and beverage, but mostly residents. So coming for the competition and then going back. So not so much in the hotels."
