UK: Climate Activists Paint Heathrow Departure Boards, Demand Fossil Fuel Treaty by 2030
London, United Kingdom - July 30, 2024
In a dramatic protest at Heathrow Airport today, two supporters of the Just Stop Oil movement painted departure boards to demand urgent global action on fossil fuels. Phoebe Plummer, 22, and Jane Touil, 58, took bold action to draw attention to the climate crisis and the need for governments worldwide to commit to ending the extraction and burning of oil, gas, and coal by 2030.
The protest, part of the Oil Kills international uprising, saw police and security quickly responding to cordon off the area and detain the activists. Phoebe Plummer emphasized, "People worldwide are rising up because our politicians are failing to act decisively against the harm caused by fossil fuels." Jane Touil added, "Fossil fuel companies are profiting while millions suffer from climate-related disasters."
This action follows unprecedented weather extremes in the UK, including record rainfall devastating crops and alarming shifts in seasonal weather patterns attributed to climate change. The Just Stop Oil movement has garnered international support, with similar protests occurring at airports across 12 countries, highlighting widespread concern over climate breakdown and the urgency for global policy change.
