This is the moment thousands of hungry guests gather to feast on 'the world's largest hotpot' prepared in a massive 150 square metre container.

The feast took place in Meishan, a city in Sichuan, China, that is known for its hot pot restaurant culture and frequently hosts such events, on Sunday, July 21.

It reportedly took organisers eight days just to build the giant pot in which the broth was prepared and then served.

A staggering two tonnes of butter was needed to prepare the soup base and the whole thing reportedly cost nearly CNY100,000 (GBP 10,725).

The event was reportedly organised by a local manufacturer of spicy broth that claimed this was the world's largest hotpot.

The manufacturer claimed they decided not to apply for a Guinness World Record, previously set by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, because their main goal was to promote the local culture and offer free tastings.

The huge hotpot served up to 138 people at once, who enjoyed a variety of side dishes, including beef tripe.

Footage shows guests relishing in the feast using gigantic chopsticks to reach the bottom of the pot and taking pictures andvideos.

Despite the event's popularity, some locals raised concerns about hygiene, citing the risk of a possible spread of infection with so many people using the same utensils they ate with to dip into the broth.

Others criticized the extravagance, suggesting it was wasteful.
