While not every person that goes on a safari is into bird watching, there are times when the behavior of birds can stop anyone in their tracks and leave you in awe. Finding this breeding pair of yellow billed hornbills while on a safari did just that. The hornbills are fascinating looking birds and are the inspiration for the character named ‘Zazu’ in The Lion King movie. During the breeding season, male and female pairs would perform these very unique duet calls that is accompanied by a one-of-a-kind display performance. The yellow billed hornbill has a very distinctive clucking call. Once one bird starts calling, the second bird will join in, then both will be clucking away with their wings spread out while moving back and forth, bowing their heads in display. This performance will happen up to fifteen times in one location. With their rather amusing duet call performance, the bird pair are strengthening their bond as well as advertising their claim on the territory. We sat there and watch this very entertaining performance repeat itself for almost twenty minutes before the birds flew off. It was incredible to see that even the small animals and birds in nature such as this sighting can be fascinating and entertaining to watch.
