SDRF saves 28 pilgrims from drowning in river in northern India, bringing total rescues to 161

SDRF of northern India’s Uttarakhand vigilant personnel rescued 28 kawad pilgrims from drowning at Kangra Ghat during the ongoing Kanwar Mela, increasing the total number of lives saved to 161 since the event began.


The incident took place at Kangra Ghat in Haridwar district on July 31.

Visuals showed at Kangra Ghat, a group of pilgrims found themselves in grave danger as they were swept away by the swift currents of the river. The scene was tense as the turbulent water threatened to engulf them. The SDRF rescue team, equipped with specialized gear and unwavering determination, sprang into action. From their vantage point on the riverbank, the team maneuvered their way through the churning waters with precision. Their swift and coordinated efforts were evident as they utilized life-saving equipment to pull the distressed pilgrims to safety.


The personnel of SDRF Uttarakhand demonstrated exceptional dedication and vigilance by rescuing 28 kanwadis who were in imminent danger of drowning at Kangra Ghat. Among the rescued, 18 were from Haryana, 1 from Uttar Pradesh, and 9 from Delhi. The timely intervention of the SDRF team not only averted a potential tragedy but also highlighted the importance of their presence at the Kanwar Mela.


Since the commencement of the Kanwar Mela, SDRF Uttarakhand has successfully rescued a total of 161 kanwadis, ensuring their safety amidst the bustling crowds. The swift response and commitment of the SDRF personnel have been praised by the rescued kanwadis, local residents, and their families for their exemplary service.
