STORYLINE:

Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit warned on Wednesday of the dangerous Israeli escalation in the region, noting that assassinations are acts that "violate international law."

In a statement, the AL chief said that carrying out assassinations reveals a great disregard for international norms and an affront to the rules that regulate relations between countries.

He added that Israel is practicing a reckless policy without foreseeing the dire consequences that could affect the region as a result of its actions.

Aboul-Gheit noted that the international community is required to exert the necessary pressure on Israel in order to prevent a comprehensive regional explosion.

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps confirmed on Wednesday that Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

In a report published on Wednesday, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said Haniyeh was assassinated around 2:00 a.m. local time (2230 GMT Tuesday) after his residence in Tehran was hit by a "projectile."

The Hamas movement confirmed the death of its leader, saying Haniyeh was assassinated by an Israeli attack. The Israeli government has not made a comment on the incident.

Since Oct. 7 last year, Israel has been launching a large-scale strike on Hamas.

According to Gaza-based health authorities, the Israeli offensive has led to the killing of over 39,445 Palestinians in the enclave, while the UN estimated that nearly 2 million people there have been displaced.
