Ground collapse in China caused by metro construction water influx, no injuries reported
Today on August 1, a significant ground collapse occurred at the intersection of Houhu Avenue and Wenbo Road in Jiang'an District, Wuhan, northern China, drawing widespread public attention.
According to eyewitness accounts, at approximately 2:30 PM, the road surface at the junction of Wenbo Road and Houhu Avenue suddenly subsided, creating a massive sinkhole approximately 20 meters long and 15 meters wide. Fortunately, there were no casualties or damage to vehicles. However, the incident caused considerable alarm and inconvenience for nearby residents and passers-by.
In response to the collapse, local authorities activated emergency protocols, implementing traffic controls to ensure safety and order at the site. Utility companies, including water, electricity, and gas services, were promptly contacted to prevent secondary hazards.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the ground collapse was caused by a sudden influx of water and sand during the construction of the Wuhan Metro Line 12 in the Shizhong section of Jiang'an District. The complex and variable geological conditions posed significant challenges to the construction process. To ensure the safety of the construction and the surrounding residents, authorities have increased monitoring and issued warnings, closely observing geological changes in the area.
The incident has disrupted the daily lives of nearby residents and led to speed restrictions on the Han-Shi High-Speed Railway, affecting train operations to and from Hankou Railway Station.
Currently, efforts to address the collapse are underway.
