France: Why is the Seine River polluted
Paris, France - July 10, 2024
With the 2024 Olympic Games underway, several training sessions had to be suspended and the men's triathlon was postponed last Monday, due to pollution levels that remain above the maximum permitted levels.
According to the organisers, the reason for the current state of the water has to do with the rains that affected the city between Friday and Saturday. The rainfall caused the sewers to overflow and the excess water entered the river without passing through the treatment plants. As a result, the Seine became polluted with sewage and wastewater. Despite this, the regulatory body gave the go-ahead for the start of the women's triathlon event.
And, although the exact levels of toxicity of the water were not specified, it was reported that the rate of E.Coli and Enterococcus is well above the recommended levels, a situation that endangers the health of athletes. The international federation's regulations state that they should not exceed 1,000 colony-forming units and 600 CFU per 100 millilitres of water respectively.
