Spain: Guardia Civil Saves Hiker Battling Crohn's Disease on Treacherous Moncayo Ascent
Tarazona, Spain - July 29, 2024
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded on Monday night as Guardia Civil mountain rescue specialists responded to an emergency call regarding a hiker in distress on the ascent to Pico del Moncayo from Collado de Castilla. The 25-year-old hiker, hailing from Madrid, was suffering from a severe episode related to Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the intestines, which led to dehydration and debilitating cramps.
The incident began around 10:20 PM when the rescue team received coordinates from emergency services indicating the exact location of the stricken hiker. Negotiating challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, the Guardia Civil's Grupo de Rescate e Intervencion en Montana (GREIM) embarked on a strenuous ascent from Haya Seca.
It wasn't until midnight that they located the young man, semi-conscious and experiencing severe tremors. Given his condition, the rescue team swiftly secured him onto a stretcher for descent. The operation was further complicated by worsening weather conditions, including strong winds and rain, coupled with rugged terrain, which slowed the evacuation process.
By approximately 2:30 AM, the rescue team safely reached the vehicle parking area with the hiker, whose condition had deteriorated during the descent, marked by occasional vomiting. Medical professionals promptly attended to him before transferring him to Hospital Reina Sofia in Tudela for further treatment.
The collaborative effort of the Guardia Civil and local emergency responders underscores their dedication and expertise in mountain rescue operations, ensuring the swift and safe evacuation of individuals in distress.
