A ravenous elephant reached through a shop window to steal a bag of medicine.

Footage shows the jumbo poking through the opening and using its trunk to take the bag in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on July 29.

But before it could flee with its loot, the owner grabbed the paper bag containing tablets and pills.

The elephant, which is part of a sanctuary, obeyed and returned the bag to the caretaker, who checked if anything was missing.

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.

The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.

Injured elephants or those rescued from the notorious tourism industry often find their way to sanctuaries, like those seen in the video.
