Residents of two neighbourhoods clash in violent ‘trash war’ over demolished wall
Residents of two adjacent neighbourhoods in northern China engaged in a chaotic "trash war" on the night of July 31.
The conflict erupted between Ideal City C District and Sunshine Norlin Bay, following a year of unresolved tensions over a demolished wall in Baoding City, Hebei Province.
The wall between the newly-built Ideal City C District and the older Sunshine Norlin Bay was destroyed by heavy rains last year, leaving a gap that Norlin Bay residents began using to access Ideal City's amenities. This incursion angered Ideal City residents, who have since been pressing for repairs, but to no avail. The delay in repairs led to growing frustration among Ideal City residents, who also began withholding property fees.
The situation worsened when Sunshine Norlin Bay's property management announced on July 25 that it would cease its services by September 1 due to financial strains, further inflaming the situation.
On the night of July 31, tensions boiled over as residents from both sides began hurling garbage at each other, resulting in a scene of scattered waste and sewage.
Police arrived promptly to diffuse the situation, and the conflict subsided with their intervention. The local police station has since launched an investigation and is working to mediate between the two communities.
Authorities in Mancheng District have formed a special team to address the wall issue, involving various stakeholders, including construction and planning departments.
Despite the complexity of the problem, officials are committed to resolving the dispute and restoring harmony between the neighbourhoods.
