A quick-thinking moviegoer saves a choking man with a Heimlich manoeuvre in eastern China.

The CCTV footage was filmed in Jinan City in Shandong Province on July 20.

The incident occurred during a humorous moment in the film, with laughter abruptly giving way to panic as the sound of frantic coughing and laboured breathing emanated from the back of the theatre. A man had choked on his food, his airway blocked and his life hanging in the balance.

Amidst the chaos, Ma Xiaojian, who was seated in the front row, immediately sprang into action. Recognising the severity of the situation, he pushed through the crowd to reach the distressed man. Without hesitation, Ma performed the Heimlich manoeuvre, a lifesaving technique he had never practised before.

As Ma worked to dislodge the obstruction, other patrons rallied to assist. Some provided light with their phone flashlights, while others sought help from cinema staff.

After approximately ten attempts, Ma's efforts paid off. The man expelled the blockage from his throat and his breathing returned to normal.

Relieved and grateful, Ma and his girlfriend resumed their seats to finish watching the film.
