Spain: Injured Mountaineer Air-Evacuated from Picos de Europa's Collado del Frade
Leon, Spain - July 31, 2024
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in the Picos de Europa mountains on Wednesday as the Guardia Civil evacuated a mountaineer injured while hiking at Collado del Frade, Valle de Sajambre.
The mountaineer suffered a shoulder dislocation after a fall during a trek with companions, rendering him unable to continue. Emergency services were alerted via Castilla y Leon's 112 Emergency Service, prompting the activation of two Greim specialists and a Guardia Civil helicopter crew.
Upon arrival at the scene, the helicopter hovered as rescuers descended to stabilize the injured climber. Following initial treatment, the mountaineer was airlifted to Riano's football field, where an awaiting ambulance transferred him to receive further medical care.
The Guardia Civil's aerial unit in Leon, comprising two pilots and a mechanic, alongside Greim specialists, remains on standby 24/7 to respond swiftly to mountain emergencies. This latest rescue marks the 15th intervention in Leon's mountains this year, underscoring the vital role of emergency services in safeguarding mountain enthusiasts.
