North Berwick, United Kingdom - August 01, 2024

North Berwick RNLI volunteers were called into action on Thursday, August 1, amidst commemorations marking the 200th anniversary of the charity's founding. What began as a poignant moment to honor two centuries of lifesaving efforts quickly turned into a real-time rescue operation.

The lifeboat crew sprung into action at 6:23 pm following reports of a person in distress off Gullane Point, just six nautical miles west of their station. Launching within six minutes of the initial call, the crew navigated swiftly around North Berwick's harbour wall, underscoring their readiness even during celebratory occasions.

Arriving on scene approximately 20 minutes later, the lifeboat located the casualty, who had sustained a leg injury, with the assistance of a vigilant member of the public. Despite the injury, the casualty had managed to reach shallow waters where rescue operations could effectively commence.

Upon arrival, the crew initiated immediate casualty care while coordinating with Aberdeen Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance was swiftly mobilized and took over medical assistance upon landing.

The collaborative effort included North Berwick, Dunbar, and Fisherrow Coastguard Rescue Teams, alongside the Scottish Ambulance Service, ensuring comprehensive care and transport of the casualty to hospital via air ambulance.

Reflecting on the incident, Rhona Meikle, Helm of North Berwick lifeboat, expressed gratitude towards the swift actions of the public and emphasized the crucial role of volunteers in supporting RNLI's lifesaving missions.
