Paris, France - July 30, 2024

Storyline:
A short but intense heatwave is hitting Paris during the ongoing Summer Olympic Games, creating tough conditions for both athletes and spectators at outdoor events.

On July 30, Paris, the host city for this year's Olympics, experienced an unusually hot and sweltering day, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius and sensible temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius, according to the French national meteorological service Meteo France.

In front of the Paris City Hall, where an Olympic outdoor live streaming site is set up for the public, many spectators had to use fans constantly to help stay cool due to the unbearable heat.

Although the live streaming site has water misting facilities, they haven’t provided much relief. Spectators watching the games on large screens under the intense sun were sweating all the time.

Moreover, with many sports events, like beach volleyball and rugby, held outdoors, the extreme heat has also posed great challenges for the athletes.

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Olympic volunteer (name not given) (partially overlaid with shot 5):
"Today is a very hot day, and we are waiting for the storm coming in the next hour. I think next week will also be very, very warm. If it rains too much, the Seine will get higher and then we will have a problem for the triathlon, also for the swim and for the race sometimes."
