Nigeria: Nigeria sees continued protests amid soaring cost of living
Lagos, Nigeria - August 02, 2024
Storyline:
Protests against the soaring cost of living entered a second day in Nigeria on Friday, with security tightened following violent clashes the previous day.
Nigeria is struggling with soaring inflation after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu introduced reforms a year ago aimed at reviving the economy.
The second day of demonstrations saw a significantly smaller turnout, with many businesses in Lagos resuming operations.
The first day of the protest witnessed violence in some states of the country, with local media reporting that 13 people had been killed across the country.
As a result, more security personnel have been drafted in to ensure the situation doesn't escalate beyond control, and the country's Police Chief has warned against violent demonstrations.

"The removal of fuel subsidy has done nothing but to reduce the lives of citizens to nothing. That has affected all sectors of the economy. We want things as simple as basic education. Free water for all. The minimum wage has just been passed to 70,000, but we say that it is a poverty wage considering the inflation in this country. 70,000 cannot buy anything in the market. The government has to have conscience. They have to also show solidarity with the common people. When you ask people to tighten their belt, you should also tighten your belt at the top."

6. Press briefing of police;
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Kayode Egbetokun, Nigeria's Inspector General of Police:
"I want to caution that those who want to come out to protest must remain peaceful. Otherwise, we will not have a choice than to respond to their acts. We had incidents where there were unprovoked attacks on policemen and other security agents. We are not going to accept that."
