STORYLINE:
Locals and tourists worldwide were thrilled to see Chinese police officers patrol in Zagreb as part of the China-Croatia joint police patrol.
The Safe Tourist Destination project, launched by Croatia, invites police officers from other countries to patrol major tourist areas along with Croatian police officers. China joined the initiative in 2018.
Starting on July 22, eight Chinese officers are conducting a one-month joint patrol mission in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Zadar, and Plitvice Lakes National Park to assist Chinese tourists, prevent crimes, and enhance police cooperation between the two nations.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Croatian): MISLAV SVIGIR, Croatian police officer
"We have a phenomenal experience with Chinese colleagues. They are not only professional colleagues, but we have developed friendships."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Croatian): RUZA SPICEK, Local flower seller
"I saw Chinese police officers with our police. They politely say hello and it is very nice to see them. They are well-mannered. They often walk around, and they were here recently."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Croatian): MATIJA NIKIC, Pedestrian
"I think this is a good idea. People from different cultures can learn from themselves, and share experiences, and it can only be good."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): MARVIN MCCLURE, Tourist from Northern Ireland
"Generally, the public will be very receptive to see police officers. They feel at ease. They feel more comfortable. There's someone to help them if they're in need of some help or whatever, but generally, I think it's a very forward-thinking strategic perspective and hands up to anyone who thought of it."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Zagreb.
